The setting was a perfect winter day for an epic battle and it took 80 minutes to decide the victor. UVIC Vikings hit a 30 m penalty goal in the 78th minute to beat the home Vikings 27-25. WWU took a 19-7 lead into the half and were hopeful for a victory over a very good opponent. Not to be as a penalty was awarded for a high tackle and the UVIV #10, a Canada U20 player, stepped up and calmly hit a 30m kick guarantee the Viking victory.
It was a tight, hard fought battle where the home team showed flashes of brilliance in attack and a very selfish defense. Eli Ashmann (Chuckanut Bay Steamers) scored an electric try from his goalline as he out ran the whole of the opposition to touch down between the posts. Coast to Coast! Freshman Sam Shulver (Eastside Tsunami) getting his first start of the year at Fullback, scored a well earned try just before the half. Charlie Funk (Roosevelt HS) provided the fans with something to cheer about as he touched down in the corner after a brilliant 50 m run. Freshman George Pritchard (Elgin Park Secondary. BC) had another strong game in the centers. As well as tactical kicking keeping the visitors at bay, he added another ten points on two conversions and two penalty goals. Lyn don Bailey was voted Man of the Match by the opposition.
The potential for this team is evident and although the result did not go their way, the team is gaining in confidence and their spirits are high.
Next up is a NCRC conference match against the much improved UW Huskies. WWU will make the trip to Seattle with two side.
A side KO 2:30 followed by B side at 4:15 on the IM Field on campus at UW
