The weather was not nice but the rugby was very good. After 80 minutes of play the host WWU Men's rugby took home a 40-24 victory over the visiting Oregon State Beavers. The Beavers jumped out to a 12-5 lead after 20 minutes but that was short lived as the boys in blue took control and went into the half time break with a 33-12 lead. Western played fast and on the front foot scoring four trys in a fifteen minute span. Freshman Trevor Martin (Port Angeles HS) made his debut on the A side a memorable one as he scored a well earned try. Sho Sekiya (Osaka Japan), Eli Ashmann (Sehome HS), Gus Sorenson and Harry Moore, both from the Eastside Tsunami touched down to give the Vikings a comfortable lead going into the second half.
The second half saw the visitors claw their way back into the game with the use of their very large forward pack. The tackle count of 145 was the highest of the season as the defense was superb against a much bigger opponent. Penalties became a factor and possession was difficult to attain. OSU had an advantage in possession 23 to 18 minutes. WWU had the advantage on the scoreboard!
With the win, the Vikings now enjoy a 5-1 NCRC record with 26 points. Boise State sits in second with a 4-2 record and 19 points. The game against Oregon on March 8 will be a deciding factor in who wins the Conference championship.
The Killer B's fell short in maintaining their unbeaten record falling to OSU 35-27.
Saturday March 1 will be the Crittenden Cup against the Chuckanut Bay RFC. KO and venue to be determined.
We had about 100 players participate in a three-hour clinic. Players from BC, Washington and Oregon ran through 8 skill stations under the guidance of WWU coaches and members of the WWU Men's team. The day ended with "The Fastest Rugby Player" competition and a presentation on nutrition and diet for the elite athlete. Each player was given a WWU Rugby t-shirt and pizza courtesy of the Western Rugby Alumni (WRA).
