Harrington Field was the perfect setting for some early season rugby last Saturday. The winter sun was out, the skies were blue, and two games of rugby were played.
A large crowd of family and supporters gathered to watch the WWU Men's team take on the visiting University of British Columbia, who traveled down with two full sides. The Vikings got off to a good start and took an early 3-0 lead on a 40-meter penalty goal by freshman George Pritchard. UBC answered quickly with a well-executed try in the corner to take the lead 5-3. Less than five minutes later, the visitors added another converted try to go into halftime with a 19-3 lead.
The second half saw the home team play a much better 40 minutes. Some key substitutions seemed to ignite a spark in the Vikings as they scored two well-deserved tries and had two more held up in goal. Freshman Saul Hickner (Kitsap Renegades) made the most of his debut on the wing as he outran one defender and broke through another to touch down. Eli Ashmann (Chuckanut Bay), always dangerous with the ball in hand, created some space and beat his opposite number for a great try.
Final Score: WWU 13 - UBC 26
The UBC Varsity Thunderbirds beat the #8 ranked Central Washington Wildcats 38-27 in a very entertaining game of skillful rugby.
Lots to work on before next week's opponent, the University of Victoria, comes to town. Kickoff will be an early 10:30 am as the women have a doubleheader with the Oregon Ducks at 1:00 and 2:30pm.
