The victory over the Oregon Ducks proved to be more than just another win in that it also gave the young Vikings another NCRC Championship.
No rain and a blustery day allowed both teams to share wind advantage for 40 minutes each. WWU took that advantage and with some great tactical kicking by George Pritchard, kept the Ducks bottled up in their own end. WWU took a 20-0 lead into the half. Liam Herring led the way (Eastside Tsunami, Portland) and scored two trys from his fullback position. Freshman George Pritchard (Elgin Park Secondary, BC) added another converted try just before the half.
Statistically the Ducks had an advantage in possession with 54.8% compared to 45.2% for WWU. WWU's defensive line speed and first up tackles were key in nullifying their attack. This has been a strength all season and shows in that the Vikings have only given up a total of 77 points in seven games while scoring a conference high of 245!
Oregon used the wind and closed the gap to 20-8 early in the second half as the Vikings took their foot off the pedal. The momentum swung back in favor of the boys in blue as Eli Ashmann (Chuckanut Bay Steamers) scored twice to put the game away. Final score 32-13.
WWU has one conference match left against a much improved Boise State team on April 12. There will be no game this week as UBCO was unable to travel. Next up will be April 5 when we host Trinity Western U at home.
The Killer B's came second in their match. Oregon was short a few players to fill out a second side so in the spirit of rugby, WWU shared some players so that the game could be played.
Saturday's victory ensures Western will host the West Coast Regionals on April 19 at Harrington Field. The opponent will be the winner of the Nor Cal and So Cal playoff.
Winning is FUN!
