It was a beautiful fall day for rugby between two schools that have played each other over the past 60 years. WWU, established in 1957, and UW, established in 1963, have enjoyed many memorable matches. Estimates are that there may be close to 100 matches between the two, including tournaments and 7's. Both teams' alumni gave birth to two men's programs that dominated Pacific Northwest rugby for three decades. Chuckanut Bay RFC just celebrated their 50th anniversary as a club and Old Puget Sound Beach RFC who amalgamated with Seattle RFC in 2005.
Western knew they had a target on their back and the UW Huskies took aim with a lot of passion and energy. WWU scored early on a perfectly executed multi-phase try in the corner by Sho Sekiya (Tokai Osaka Gyosei HS). Minutes later, George Pritchard (Elgin Park Sec. BC) added a 30 meter penalty goal. The Vikings played the majority of the half in the UW end and added another try by Gus Sorenson (Cleveland HS Portland) who powered his way over for the try. George Pritchard converted and WWU took a 15-0 lead into the half. Pressure produces points!
The second half kick off was delayed due to an injury sustained by a WWU player. An ambulance was called and fortunately, the player was released at about 6:00 PM in stable condition.
It was time for both teams to reactivate and WWU wasted little time. Freshman Tavoi Filivaa (Kona Royals, HI) to score his first try in a Viking uniform. Western added two more trys, one by Eli Ashmann (Sehome HS, Bellingham) and Captain Harry Moore (Cleveland HS, Portland). George Pritchard added two conversions. There was no quit in the Huskies and they fought their way down inside the WWU half and managed a well deserved try to end the match. Final Score 36-7 for a NCRC bonus point win for the Vikings.
The Killer B's continued their winning ways with an impressive 36-0 win over the Huskies. Peter Nourse (Eastside HS) and Trevor Martin (Port Angeles HS) both had excellent performance.
Next up for the Vikings will be on the road to Langley BC to take on the Trinity Western University Spartans. The match will be played at the Langley Events center. KO is 2:30
The Killer B's will have a bye with their next match against Oregon State U in Corvalis on November 16.
