The WWU Men's rugby team travelled with forty five players to Corvallis to take on the Beavers of OSU. At the end of a cold day in Corvallis the Vikings were celebrating two victories. The A side beat a undefeated OSU side 36-9 and the Killer B's remain unbeaten and still feared with a gutsy 19-12 win
The team was excited to take the field after a really good week of training. The team was also at full strength for the first time since the first game of the Fall. Lots of focus on defense during the week as well working on tactics to produce multi phase attacks. The emphasis on those two key parts of the game paid off on the scoreboard as OSU did not score a try against a well organized WWU defense. OSU managed only nine points on three penalty goals. In attack, WWU Scored five trys against a tough OSU defense including one that came was a result of a nine phase attack. Time and time again the Vikings shut down the Beavers attempt to cross the gainline with excellent line speed that took away time and space from the OSU attack. Try scorers were Lyndon Bailey, Los Gatos HS, CA) Gus Sorenson( Eastside Tsunami, Portland Oregon), Marc Jackson (Camas HS) Luke Burbank (Camas HS) and Charlie Funk (Roosevelt HS Seattle). George Pritchard (Elgin Park Secondary, Surrey BC) was good on four of five conversions and added a penalty goal.
Half time score was 24-9 WWU.
Over all an excellent performance over 80 minutes. Six Freshman started the match with three more coming off the bench makes for a promising future. WWU sits on top of the NCRC with 16 points overall and in the drivers seat going into the second half of the season.
Some wish for it, we work for it!
