It was a chilly and dry Friday night, perfectly suited for a match of skillful rugby. The winner of the day claims the Cascade Cup.
For the Vikings, lining up against Central is always a great way to see how they measure up against the ranks of a distinguished D1A program. Coach Todd Thornley selected a roster of talented young wildcats to defend Tomlinson Stadium against the visiting Western Vikings.
The Vikings got off to rough start, allowing Central to block a clearing kick on the opening kickoff reception and recover it for a try. The wildcats quickly regained possession and tallied another score. Although trailing, Western eventually found their footing and displayed some toughness in the contact areas and in the set piece.
Western’s only score of the day came from the explosive and extremely opportunistic Flyhalf, Sho Sekiya from Osaka, Japan. From the standoff position, Sho dashed to a line outside of the Wildcat’s centers and even beat the Central fullback to the chalk.
Over the course of the night, Central wore down the Viking defense and scored 7 tries.
Final score 41-5, Central.
For a night that didn’t yield the desired score line, it was still successful for this young Vikings’ squad in testing their skills against a formidable opponent.
